If your kids enjoy ginger ale on a hot summer day, they might have a lot of fun helping you make your own! It’s pretty simple and a unique way to have older kids get to know their way around a kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • ½ lb fresh ginger
  • 1 cup honey OR 1 ½ cups sugar if you don’t have honey
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup lemon or lime juice. Fresh is preferred but bottled works too.
  • Sparkling water (individual cans or a larger bottle)

Directions:

  1. Wash and chop the ginger into small 1/4 inch slices. No need to peel.
  2. Put ginger in 2 cups of water, bring to a boil, and then simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and add the honey (or sugar), salt, and juice. Stir until the sweetener is dissolved.
  4. Let cool on the counter, then strain through a sieve to get out the ginger bits, and put in the fridge.
  5. Once chilled, serve by adding it to cold sparkling water. You can adjust how strong the flavor is by increasing/decreasing the amount of ginger concentrate you mix into the sparkling water.

Presto! A refreshing drink that will help the whole family beat the heat!
